I am a PhD Student with Patrick Baudisch at Hasso Plattner Institute.

My research takes place in the space of personal fabrication, a vision of a future in which anyone can create physical objects with the help of a combination of personal computers and digital fabrication machinery, such as 3D printers and laser cutters. The objective of my research is to push personal fabrication past the playful or decorative prototypes currently pursued by hobbyists and “makers". I am exploring how to enable these users to instead produce objects robust enough for sustained, load-bearing use.

As summarized in the figure above, my PhD examines a vision of a future in which makers can create, or consumers can obtain, useful load-bearing physical objects, such as custom furniture. The first three enable non-experts to produce load-bearing objects. The fourth makes the object easy to ship and trivial to assemble, like IKEA furniture, thus enabling consumers to assemble load-bearing objects.
